The purpose of the NEWBIE project is to develop sustainable, safe, and fast-charging next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIB) with a long service life in electromobility applications. The goals of the NEWBIE project here are a significant reduction in charging time, material and cost savings through more accurate and reliable battery design, energy and cost savings in manufacturing through more efficient processes, and early detection of rejects. The NEWBIE project thus covers a number of critical points in the battery value chain and takes a holistic approach to improving the product and production: from optimization of the cells, optimization of the manufacturing processes for the cells, improved cooling options in the module, resource-optimized materials in the manufacture of the module to recycling-optimized design, this program combines target-oriented solution approaches.
The project goals of the BLB include:
CO2 emission reduction and process cost reduction
Material-compatible and at the same time energy-efficient conditioning of the process atmosphere
Reduction of the reject rate through material-adapted process design and knowledge of process-relevant intermediate product properties
Reduction of charging time while ensuring an aging-optimized fast charging operation
