Habilitation

The habilitation serves as proof of outstanding competence in independent scientific research and qualified independent teaching. With the habilitation, the habilitated person is granted the authority to teach independently at the university for a specific academic subject or field (authorisation to teach or venia legendi). The habilitation is one way of gaining eligibility for appointment to a professorship.

Requirements and procedure for habilitation

At TU Braunschweig, habilitation is possible in all subjects in which TU Braunschweig can also award a doctorate. For the habilitation, the submission of a written habilitation thesis, proof of the doctorate or an equivalent qualification and proof of teaching activity of four semesters is required. If admitted to habilitation, a scientific lecture with a subsequent colloquium is required. Details are regulated at in the joint habilitation regulations.

Admission to habilitation shall be applied for in writing to the competent faculty. When applying for admission, the written habilitation thesis and proof of the teaching provided must be submitted. The ascertainment of the successful completion of a course and the acceptance of the written habilitation thesis are prerequisites for admission to the scientific lecture followed by a colloquium.

Habilitation-equivalent achievements

In order to be appointed to a W2/W3 professorship at the TU Braunschweig, it is a prerequisite for candidates in accordance with § 25 Paragraph 1 No. 4 a), b) NHG that they have achieved additional academic or artistic achievements beyond their doctorate.

The additional academic achievements can be documented within the framework of a junior professorship or through a habilitation.

If the candidate does not have this qualification, the so-called habilitation equivalence must be established. This opens up the possibility for candidates to prove with other academic achievements that they have worked actively and with commitment on the innovation, further development and utilisation of knowledge gained with their research. The particularities of the respective discipline are decisive here. The usual publication impact for the discipline and the classification of the candidate's research in the discipline are the yardsticks of the research performance.

In the case of additional artistic achievements, the classification in the artistic work performance of the candidates in their subject is also carried out.
