In the SUSTRAB project, strategies for increasing transparency and resource efficiency within the production chain of cell materials and battery cells are systematically investigated and tested experimentally and methodically. The project contributes significantly to the holistic understanding of the battery life cycle, starting with raw material extraction, through material synthesis and battery cell production, to material recycling by using secondary raw materials (for synthesis) in the sense of the circular economy. In order to fully investigate the complex interdependencies along global supply chains, the project relies on a cooperation of research and industry partners from Germany and Australia. The project pursues the following overarching goals:
Evaluation and improvement of the recycling of cathode active materials within the synthesis and subsequent use in electrodes and battery cells.
Improvement of the robustness of life cycle data for the development of green batteries and intensification of cross-value chain research cooperation with Australia.
Increasing the transparency of deployed battery materials through targeted characterization methods and the collection and provision of data in a data platform demonstrator across the value chain.
Increase resource efficiency and decarbonization in the battery materials value chain by designing efficient processes and improving transparency.
