Infrastructure for the sustainable production of large-format battery cells

The proposal "Infrastructure for the sustainable production of large-format battery cells", funded by the European Regional Development Fund, aims to expand the infrastructural equipment of the Battery LabFactory Braunschweig (BLB) at the Technische Universität Braunschweig with new, innovative process technologies so that new materials can be processed sustainably and economies of scale can be investigated using large-format battery cells that are close to industrial scale. The results obtained with this infrastructure will provide knowledge for the development of materials, components and cells for innovative battery technologies (new generations of lithium-ion batteries as well as lithium solid-state batteries) and for the further development of process understanding in battery cell production. The expansion of BLB’s existing infrastructure includes the following equipment:

  • Flame temperature analysis sensors for inline-capable, high-temperature stable and spatially resolved gas detection
  • Three-roll calender for solvent-free and environmentally friendly dry coating of anode and cathode composite electrodes
  • Powerful laser source for speed-enhanced processing of new electrode materials and laminates
  • Single sheet stacking system for flexible stacking of electrodes with new materials as well as laminates of electrodes and separator
  • Deep-drawing tool for high drawing depths even with large-format pouch cells
  • Lightweight production hall at the research airport campus in Braunschweig as a production environment for process technology for the sustainable future-proof production of large-format battery cells close to industry scale

The expansion of BLB's existing production and research facilities forms the prerequisite for further advancing cutting-edge research through new research activities in the field of battery and energy technology and expanding the corresponding knowledge. The results achieved will enable Lower Saxony's regional industry to independently and sustainably produce battery cells with high performance and to offer products and services for the rapidly developing battery industry.

 

EFRE-Projekt „Infrastruktur zur nachhaltigen Produktion großformatiger Batteriezellen“

Der vom Europäischen Fond für regionale Entwicklung geförderte Förderantrag „Infrastruktur zur nachhaltigen Produktion großformatiger Batteriezellen“ zielt darauf ab, die infrastrukturelle Ausstattung der Battery LabFactory Braunschweig (BLB) der Technischen Universität Braunschweig um neuartige, innovative Prozesstechniken zu erweitern, sodass neue Materialien nachhaltig prozessiert und Skaleneffekte anhand industrienaher großformatiger Batteriezellen untersucht werden können. Die mit der aufzubauenden Infrastruktur erhaltenen Ergebnisse liefern Erkenntnisse zur Entwicklung von Materialien, Komponenten und Zellen für innovative Batterietechnologien (neue Generationen von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien sowie Lithium-Festkörperbatterien) und zur Weiterentwicklung des Prozessverständnisses in der Batteriezellproduktion. Die Erweiterung der bestehenden Infrastruktur der BLB umfasst die folgenden Positionen:

  • Flammentemperaturanalyse-Sensoren zur inline-fähigen und hochtemperaturstabilen sowie ortsaufgelösten Gasdetektion
  • Dreiwalzenkalander für die lösungsmittelfreie und umweltschonende Trockenbeschichtung von Anoden- und Kathodenkompositelektroden
  • Eine leistungsstärkere Laserquelle zur geschwindigkeitsgesteigerten Konfektionierung neuer Elektrodenmaterialien und -laminate
  • Einzelblattstapelanlage für die flexible Stapelbildung von Elektroden mit neuen Materialien sowie von Laminaten aus Elektroden und Separator
  • Tiefzieheinrichtung für hohe Ziehtiefen auch bei großformatigen Pouchzellen
  • Leichtbauhalle am Campus Forschungsflughafen in Braunschweig als Produktionsumgebung für die Prozesstechnik zur nachhaltigen zukunftssicheren Produktion industrienaher großformatiger Batteriezellen

Die Erweiterung der bereits bestehenden Produktions- und Forschungsanlagen der BLB bildet die Voraussetzung, durch neue Forschungsaktivitäten auf dem Gebiet der Batterie- und Energietechnik die Spitzenforschung weiter voranzutreiben und das entsprechende Wissen in der Region auszubauen. Die erzielten Ergebnisse werden die regionale Industrie Niedersachsens in die Lage versetzen, eigenständig und nachhaltig Batteriezellen mit hoher Performance zu produzieren sowie Produkte und Dienstleistungen für die sich rasant entwickelnde Batterieindustrie anzubieten.
