To make aviation more sustainable, new propulsion concepts are being investigated, including fuel cell-based systems. These systems release warm, dry air as well as cold, humid air into the environment during operation. Through the mixing of these air streams with each other and with the cold ambient air, droplet formation can occur in the exhaust plume due to homogeneous nucleation, followed by droplet growth through condensation.
As a member of the Working Group on Aircraft Propulsion Systems, I am involved in the experimental investigation of these phenomena within the framework of the GENtwoCLImA project. The goal is to replicate the underlying thermodynamic processes under realistic environmental conditions in an experimental setup and to obtain reference data for the calibration and validation of numerical simulations.
