At IFAS, I am involved in the design, numerical simulation, and experimental investigation of turbomachinery. My research focuses on rotor-only axial fans, which are used in air conditioning, cooling, and ventilation applications. I focus on the static pressure recovery in the free discharge flow of such machines, which has been largely neglected in the state of the art. Increasing this pressure recovery can help to increase the efficiency of rotor-only axial fans. To investigate this phenomenon, I use RANS/LES hybrid methods in addition to established standard simulation techniques. To validate the numerical results, I examine the prototypes on the IFAS test bench, using particle image velocimetry and hot-wire measurements, among other methods.
In addition, I am working on the design of turbo components for novel fuel cell aircraft propulsion systems, gradient-based geometry optimization using adjoint methods, and FEM simulations.
