The language courses are free of charge for TU students and HBK students. 

SEPA registration procedure

A SEPA mandate will be sent to you with the course registration. Please print out the mandate, sign it, and return it within five days to the Accounting Departement or the Language Centre's Main Office (Geschäftszimmer). The mandate will be recorded in the Language Centre within seven days and you will receive a notification by e-mail about the transfer date of the debit. After the direct debit has been transferred, the registration is complete.

Validity of the SEPA mandate

Your SEPA mandate at the Language Centre never loses its validity. This means that you only have to fill out a mandate once, irrespective of the number of courses you book. The costs will be automatically debited from your account. However, if at any time your bank details have changed, please report this immediately Accounting Departement or the Language Centre's Main Office (Geschäftszimmer).

•  If you are absent without excuse during the first week of the course, your registration for the course will lapse and you will be excluded from further participation in the course. You must email the instructor if you are unable to attend the first session to avoid being dropped from the course.

• Successful course attendance can only be certified if you attend regularly. "Regularly" means that you can only miss up to a maximum of 25 percent of the lessons. It does not matter whether the absences are caused by illness or other reasons.
• To meet the minimum attendance requirement, you must not exceed three days of absence (6 SWS for a 2 SWS per week course), or six days of absence (12 SWS for a 4 SWS per week course).

• Please clarify whether the credits earned at the Language Centre will be recognized in your department before taking a course at the Language Centre.

• The credits awarded for each course are calculated according to the amount of work required and not according to the participant's course level or grade. For a two-hour language course (2 SWS), you will receive 2 credits for the attendance and the successful completion of the exam; for a four-hour course (4SWS), you will receive 4 credits.

• The examination board of your respective field of study is responsible for the recognition of credits acquired at other universities. The credit transfer is carried out there. Please contact the responsible person of your faculty. The Language Centre can provide advice and a recommendation when checking equivalences of language courses on request.

Every semester, some of our courses are taught online. This is accompanied by some special regulations regarding the running of the courses, which apply to all courses at the Language Centre in addition to the existing regulations (Fee Regulations, Examination Regulations):

• Just as in face-to-face teaching, attendance is compulsory. Please attend at least 75% of the teaching organized in video conferences.
• Please arrange for a room where you can work online without being disturbed.
• The use of a microphone and camera is indispensable for the communication-oriented language teaching practiced at the Language Centre. Please ensure that you have the necessary technical equipment and test it in good time before the start of the course.
• In case of transmission problems, it may be useful to switch off an open VPN connection and close programs with connections to other servers.
• For languages with other alphabets, please make sure that you set your keyboard accordingly or use keyboard stickers.
• You are not allowed to make audio or video recordings of the synchronous courses. Furthermore, no camera may be used for review during written course final exams.

Experience has shown that digital language teaching requires an additional time commitment compared to presence-based language teaching. Please plan for this before taking a course at the Language Centre.

In online teaching, higher demands are placed on your autonomous learning skills.  Please participate actively and in a concentrated manner in the classroom

We certify your participation in a language course with one of the following course certificates:

• Graded course certificate with ECTS credits: You will receive this certificate if you have fulfilled the minimum attendance requirements and all performance requirements. Your grade will appear on the certificate.
• Ungraded course certificate with ECTS credits: You will receive this certificate if you have met the minimum attendance requirements and all performance requirements. Your grade will not appear on the certificate.
• Attendance certificate without grade and ECTS credits: You will receive this certificate if you have met the minimum attendance requirements but not all performance requirements.

To meet the minimum attendance requirements, you must not exceed three days of absence (6 SWS) for a 2 SWS per week course, or six days of absence (12 SWS) for a 4 SWS per week course.

If you have already successfully completed an English course at the Language Center in which all four skills (listening comprehension, speaking, reading comprehension, writing) were tested on level B2 or above, you can request a language certificate via our online portal AURA.

English Language Proficiency Examination

UNIcert® is a university-specific system for training, testing and certifying foreign language competences. The UNIcert® language certificates are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and comprise five levels of competence from A2 to C2. The examinations can only be offered by UNIcert® accredited universities and are an internationally accepted proof of foreign language skills. The current accreditation of the Language Centre by UNIcert® expires on 30 September 2024. 

As a result, the courses in the summer semester 2024 will be the last courses that can be credited for the issuance of a UNIcert® certificate in the foreign languages Chinese, English, French, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

UNIcert® certificates are recognised by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) as proof of language proficiency. If you are interested, please contact the head of the respective language section.

TOEFL® stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is the admission requirement for studying at numerous universities in English-speaking countries, with universities setting the required score at their discretion. A TOEFL language certificate is also often required for internship applications abroad. The restructured two-hour TOEFL-iBT tests all four skills: Listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, and speaking. In some cases, the skills tested are combined within one task, e.g. listening and then speaking, or e.g. reading, listening and a written response.

To prepare you well for these requirements, we offer the TOEFL preparation course.

Unfortunately, the TOEFL itself cannot be taken in Braunschweig.
