From June 18 to 20, 2026, we participated in the 20th Concrete Canoe Regatta in Brandenburg an der Havel with our student team, the “Baulöwen,” from the Technical University of Braunschweig. In this nationwide competition, universities and schools develop floatable concrete canoes that must prove themselves both in athletic competition and before a panel of experts in the areas of construction, design, and sustainability. In addition to the 100-meter sprint and 100-meter slalom races, the focus is particularly on the innovative application of modern building material technologies.
Over the past six months, we worked with 24 students to develop two different concrete canoes. We collaborated closely in the areas of organization, engineering, construction, and communication, and received technical support from the Institute for Building Materials, Solid Construction, and Fire Protection (iBMB).
Our concept centered on two different development approaches. With the “Hydrolöwen,” our goal was to develop an exceptionally lightweight canoe. Thanks to an optimized concrete mix, we achieved a weight of just 55 kilograms and a wall thickness of only five millimeters for a length of 5.1 meters. Our second canoe, “Leo,” was designed with a focus on sustainability. Here, we relied on a low-carbon concrete mix...
