The presented demonstrator showcases recent advances in a novel 3D concrete printing technology known as Shotcrete 3D Printing (SC3DP). It consists of a fully reinforced, double-curved concrete wall element with high surface quality, developed to highlight the unique capabilities of this fabrication method.
The demonstrator emphasizes two key aspects of SC3DP: first, the integration of structural reinforcement in both principal directions during the additive manufacturing process; and second, an automated surface finishing workflow that enables the production of high-quality concrete surfaces. Together, these aspects illustrate the combination of additive fabrication with formative and subtractive post-processing strategies.
The demonstrator was designed and fabricated at the large-scale Digital Building Fabrication Laboratory (DBFL) at Technische Universität Braunschweig. The resulting concrete element measures approximately 2.5 × 2.3 × 0.18 m and serves as a proof of concept, situating SC3DP within the current state of the art in 3D concrete printing.
