Short profile

Professor Ulrich Reimers is the Managing Director of the Institute for Communications Technology (IfN), where he heads the Department of Electronic Media: Systems Theory and Technology. The department’s current research focusses on the co-existence of (wireless) broadcast and broadband networks and on fast data transfer systems. The IfN’s contributions to the development of classic broadband systems in the context of the DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) consortium have gained much recognition. Reimers is regarded as the father of digital television.

Professor Reimers studied at TU Braunschweig and earned his doctoral degree in 1982 from the Institute for Communications Technology. He then joined the television division of Robert Bosch GmbH. Between 1989 and March 1993, he served as Technical Director of NDR (Northern German Broadcasting). On 1 April 1993, he was asked to join TU Braunschweig’s IfN.

Since 1 October 2012, Professor Reimers has been serving as Vice President for Strategic Development and Technology Transfers. In his current term of office, he will be focussing on TU Braunschweig’s strategic planning. Considerable challenges must also be met in the area of the university’s information technologies, for example to account for new EU regulations. Professor Reimers’s third focal point will be technology transfers, especially in cooperation with the City of Braunschweig, the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, companies, trade associations and start-ups.
