Optimization of biological treatment plants via data logging, process automation and peak load management

Client: GVoA Minden

Schedule: 2011-2013

Head of project: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Fricke

Coordinator: Dipl.-Biotechnol. Timo Thiel, Dr.-Ing. Tobias Bahr

Partner: WAGO Kontakttechnik GmbH & Co. KG

Location: Minden, North Rhine Westphalia , Germany

Aim:

Optimization of biological treatment plants needs a reliable database of all consumed goods. During several projects a lack of knowledge in the field of detailed information concerning the energy consumption was discovered. The only available data are the total gasoline and gas as well as the overall electric energy consumption. To optimize a plant it is necessary to know exactly the operating time and the load capacity of the main mechanics, like pumps, conveyers and fans. Therefore the Technical University of Braunschweig together with WAGO one of the leading companies in the field of process automation design a wireless data logging system which is as a first step measuring the electric power demand of the main consumer. In a second step a self learning program will optimize the operating time of clustered mechanical devices to minimize unoccupied times. Reducing the peak load of the plant is another goal of this project to balance the energy consumption during the working period. The collected data will not only be used to optimize the plant they are also used in a computer program to compare different parts of a plant among each other and with the same parts in other facilities as well as with the best known technique to get further information of possibilities to improve the plant and where investment cost are most effective.
