This paper focuses on measures of risk and risk assessment. Following an overview of conventional measures of risk and criteria for risk acceptance, it introduces an alternative approach for assessing the risk inherent in a transport system, based on the shortening of a human lifetime. This analytical method is then applied to the example of a level crossing.
