Aims

Students will learn the non-destructive, semi-destructive and destructive methods in evaluation of existing timber structural elements. Focus will be on underlying principles and limitations of available methods. The theoretical knowledge of various assessment methods and understanding of timber as a structural material will be strengthened by laboratory exercises and demonstration of different methods.

Content

  • fundamental properties of wood
  • anatomy of wood and wood species
  • introduction to statistical evaluation in assesment
  • visual inspection, qualitative and quantitative methods
  • direct and indirect methods
  • local and global methods of assesment (acoustic methods, GPR, resistance drilling, x-ray, screw withdrawal, micro tension, core drilling, and other destructive, semi-destructive and nondestructive methods)
  • repair of wood in structures
