Aural Oral

Course content

One of the overarching aims of the Aural-Oral course is for students to practice their listen-ing comprehension skills and build on the skills and knowledge that they have acquired in other classes, including Grammar I and Writing I. For this purpose, two sets of listening ma-terials will be used outside of class, which offer the students authentic audio and audio-visual input. One is an audiobook version of selected stories from The Adventures of Sher-lock Holmes, and the other is the American television series (Lost).

The goal of the class is to allow students to demonstrate that they have engaged with the listening materials used in this class to such a degree that they can:

  • comprehend the English grammar and vocabulary contained in these materials,
  • understand the pronunciation of the varieties of English that they are exposed to,
  • identify cultural references and conduct research into these,
  • identify the central characteristics of the media that they have engaged with (television series and detective stories).
