On 3 and 4 December, Prof. Dr. Carmen Becker and Laura Plackties from the department of English Language Teaching attended the kick-off meeting for the international Erasmus+ project Intercultural Citizenship Education through Teacher Training for the Mediation of Picturebooks (ICETEMP) in Udine, Italy. Project Coordinator, Karoline Søgaard from Københavns Professionshøjskole in Copenhagen, Denmark, and representatives from the 7 universities participating in the project organized the work for the next 3 years.
The ICETEMP project involves 7 universities: the international coordinating university is Københavns Professionshøjskole, Copenhagen, Denmark. The partner universities are Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal, University of Çukurova, Adana, Turkey, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau, Germany Università degli Studi di Udine, Italy and Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany.
Co-funded by the European Union, the project focuses on the use of picturebooks as a resource for promoting intercultural dialogue and responsible citizenship education in the English language classroom. It proposes innovative teacher training actions through dialogic learning to address complex global topics such as migration, refugee life, the effects of war and social conflict, racism, prejudice, discrimination, and environmental challenges. The primary target group includes English language teachers and student teachers from the participating institutions, who will collaborate to develop and pilot a teacher education module. All materials and resources created during the project will be available for open access on the project's website and will be disseminated through academic publications, websites, social media, and cultural events organized by the seven universities.
The first meeting in Udine marked an important step forward for the ICETEMP project and emphasized the commitment of all partners. We are very much looking forward to this collaborative project and to sharing our progress and results.
