About FAST

The FAST Project (KA210-SCH-58E6532A) seeks to design and implement innovative teaching materials that introduce the Holocaust through visual narratives in English Language Teaching, with the aim of fostering Global Citizenship Education. The selected literature, picturebooks and graphic novels, depict Jewish lived experiences during the Holocaust and will be used as a teaching resource for learners in upper-primary and lower secondary ELT education (age 10-14) to inspire young global agents of change using English as a lingua franca.

FAST is rooted in visual children’s Holocaust literature. Whereas literature as such might not ‘fight antisemitism’, it can contribute to knowledge, empathy, understanding and it can encourage resistance and action taking. In this way the FAST project aims to contribute to the fight against distortion and denial, and discrimination.

FAST IDEA

Our Idea

The FAST Project will select four picturebooks and four graphic novels and develop eight lesson plans with ELT and cross-curricular activities and a project handbook with an additional baseline knowledge component.

FAST AIMS

Our Aim

The project will conduct teacher training and pilot materials in-school to help schools implement a purposeful set of resources to foster tolerance and cultivate greater understanding.

Our Logo

The FAST logo was designed by TU Braunschweig in cooperation with all project partners. It is rich in colour and symbolism, which can be explained as follows:

Colours:

  • Pink: This colour acknowledges the persecution of homosexuals, who were forced to wear a pink triangle under the Nazi regime. Today, the LGBTQ community continues to face discrimination. Pink therefore symbolizes the fight against hatred and exclusion.
  • Green: This colour represents hope - hope for unity and tolerance, which are fundamental values of global citizenship.
  • Red: This is the colour of resistance in Italy. It pays tribute not only to our Italian project partners and their courage to resist, but also to all Jewish and non-Jewish resistance.
  • Yellow: This is the colour of the yellow badge and serves as a reminder of the Jewish people who were forced to wear it.

Symbols:

  • Book pages: These represent the pages of the picture books and graphic novels used in the project.
  • Butterfly: The butterfly is often connected to children in the camps and became a symbol of hope. The butterfly’s large eyes resemble those of children, looking at the book pages, learning to understand and empathise.
  • Star of David: This symbolizes the Jewish dimension of the project and the fight against antisemitism to safeguard Jewish life. It is placed within the ‘T’ of Together in the project name. The white spot in the star represents the individual who chooses to stand up and be an ally.
  • Dot: A full stop which serves as a visual interpretation of  ‘stop’, symbolizing the end of hatred, discrimination and antisemitism.

ICBUSCA (Istituto Comprensivo Carducci di Busca)

The Istituto Comprensivo Carducci di Busca (ICBUSCA) is a state school that welcomes pupils aged 3 to 14. The main activity is the education and teaching of pupils, including, in particular, literacy in the mother tongue, mathematics and science, strengthening the anthropological area (Geography and History in particular), civic education and civic engagement, education for environmental sustainability, and so on. In the lower secondary school, particular attention is given to music teaching, in fact, students can learn to play piano, flute, guitar, or violin.

The school is strongly orientated in favour of inclusive activities for disabled pupils, non-Italian speakers, and students with special educational needs in general. For these reasons, the school is part of numerous educational networks to ensure that the school could really become a place of well-being suitable for educating pupils to be knowledgeable and competent citizens of the future.

Istoreto (Instituto piemontese per la storia della Resistenza e della società contemporanea "Giorgio Agosti" – ets)

The Istituto piemontese per la storia della Resistenza e della società contemporanea "Giorgio Agosti" deals with the conservation and enhancement of historical heritage concerning the Resistance and contemporary society. ISTORETO, established in 1947, is specialised in studying, archiving, and spreading documentation on war, resistance, and deportation in Piedmont.

ISTORETO also keeps extensive archives and cooperates with other museums, like the Museo Diffuso della Resistenza and the Polo del '900 in Turin, to make its historical collections available to the public. Along with archival activity, ISTORETO performs educational activities: research projects, exhibitions, and educational activities aimed at students and teachers. It deals principally with civic education, knowledge, and the correct placement of Piedmontese history within the local and international context.
