The corona pandemic influenced our everyday practices, life-styles and notions of the city, our homes and our work places. While it has opened questions on: right to the city, inclusivity, inequalities of resources, home-ownership, rethinking the analogue and the digital, as well as personal reflections on spatial usage, questions on the post-crisis dynamics and what is yet to come remain open!
Social distancing curated new everyday practices for all of us. Moreover, the new conditions carved out creative ways of encountering and exchange in places, from balconies as interfaces to bookshelfs where people could leave and take food products. Suddenly we all knew how to use the right softwares to get access to communicating in the virtual sphere. In this condensed period of rapid adaptation, have we recognized new potentials for spatial discourses?
This particular moment, a threshold of the pandemic, requires a reflection on personal everyday mappings, microgeographies that happened in reality and ones imagined!
ASSIGNMENT
Imagine that you should create a poster-mapping your everyday narrative of using the city, home and working place, during and after the corona pandemic, showing public-private intersections, home and city, reality and imagined, regulated and rebellious, nature and artifice, collective and intimate!
Create a set of 3 Maps (A4, vertical format) of your different realities, experiences and stories during time of extreme social distancing and after. They could assemble: texts, drawings, perspectives, diagrams, concepts, routes, photographs – feel free! One map can contain one of these techniques or all of them combined.
The following questions should be answered through the mappings:
How did your use of public spaces change during the first peak of the pandemic and now? Which aspects do you think were crucial?
How did your notions of the home and the private transform?
What challenges did you encounter with the format change of your working place?
What are your everyday spatial experiences, stories and conflicts in the (post-)pandemic? Which social and spatial consequences are important for the future dynamics between public spaces, home and working places?
