Research at the Chair of International Relations focuses on the theoretical and empirical analyses of global governance, international institutions and organizations. The main emphasis is in particular on global crime governance, the governance of global illegal markets, non-traditional security threats and global governance, international institutions and policy diffusion in world society.

Research at the chair takes place within individual as well as externally funded joint projects of different scope. Current research results of the employees are regularly presented and discussed on the Research Away Day. Exchange with related disciplines and research topics regularly takes place in the research colloquium, where external researchers present their current research. 

The chair is also involved in interdisciplinary research project. Research is currently being carried out in the framework of the EXCEED network in the area of global water governance (funded by the DAAD). Regular summer schools are also held through this project to exchange ideas internationally. In addition, the Chair of International Relations participates in the REPLAWA collaborative project, conducting research on global plastic governance.
