My research interests centre around broadening the impact of environmental chemistry using novel techniques and approaches adaptable to remote areas and developing economies. Specifically, I have an interest in mercury in the environment; understanding the cycling of this unique and toxic element between the atmo-, hydro-, and lithospheres. To fully comprehend and control the environmental and human health impacts of mercury we must improve our knowledge of mercury reactions and specific speciations in these three crucial components of the environment. This is of particular concern at mercury contaminated sites due to the ability of mercury to undergo long-range transport and achieve a global distribution. Better control of mercury at emissions sources may provide one of the key mechanisms for reducing its impact globally.
