The junior research group Standardization for “Omics” in biomolecular measurements, founded in 2025 at PTB as part of a joint appointment process with TU Braunschweig, focuses on computational mass spectrometry with applications in lipidomics, metabolomics, and proteomics.

We develop open-source and reproducible data-processing pipelines to support standardisation in mass spectrometry-based omics technologies, integrate established software tools for feature detection, alignment, and normalization, and create novel algorithms for quality control, uncertainty estimation, and data harmonization. To address the high dimensionality and complexity of mass-spectrometric omics data, we apply statistical methods and machine learning for pattern detection, outlier handling, and automated classification. In addition, we develop strategies for identifying technical artifacts, annotating spectral signals, and integrating multi-layer biological information such as proteomics and metabolomics. For broad usability and long-term accessibility, all methods are implemented in user-friendly, open-source software.
