Become a Microelectronics Engineer and be part of the most impactful developments in technology
Microelectronics Engineering is not only already one of the pillars of our modern world, but also the key to the future of technology. Just in 2025, Germany proclaimed microelectronics engineering as one of only six key enabling technologies in the national High-Tech-Agenda, underlining the strategic goal of Germany and Europe to re-establish a strong ecosystem in microelectronics. Become part of this development and take the chance to dive into microelectronics at TU Braunschweig!
The specialisation “Microelectronics Engineering” is part of the Master’s degree programme “Electrical Engineering” at TU Braunschweig and provides a broad insight into fascinating quantum technologies, including both silicon CMOS as well as Gallium Nitride-based microelectronics and photonics.
Microelectronics Engineering is a strategic focus area of TU Braunschweig
TU Braunschweig has established an internationally visible center for microelectronics, the Nitride Technology Center (NTC) together with its regional partners Leibniz Universität Hannover and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt Braunschweig (PTB), the second largest national metrology institute worldwide. NTC is a well-known hub for technology exchange between academia, startups and industry.
With the “Microelectronics Engineering” specialisation, you will become a part of this network and get a sound introduction to microelectronics, including front-end and back-end chip-processing as well as chip design. Discover both, the world of silicon as well as Gallium Nitride technology in a hands-on fashion. Our strong ecosystem in microelectronics offers an early contact to the global microelectronics industry as well as regional start-ups, giving you ideal starting conditions for your professional career.

These specialisations are based on the leading research topics of TU Braunschweig’s electrical engineering institutes.
During your studies, you can choose from six innovative, in some cases interdisciplinary, specialisations:
- NEW: Microelectronics Engineering, fully taught in English
- Autonomous Intelligent Systems
- Energy Systems and Electrical Drives
- Information Technologies
- Photonics and Quantum Technologies
- Metrology and Measurement Technology
You will study under great supervision in an excellent faculty. Studying Electrical Engineering and Information Technology with specialization in Microelectronics Engineering at TU Braunschweig means hands-on, practical learning at a renowned institution with a high international profile. Your degree will therefore be a strong foundation for both, a career in academia or industry – reaching from semiconductor technologies and CMOS design to quantum computers and the application of integrated circuits in the biomedical field.
This programme is suited for students with very good English skills who are interested in the latest high-tech developments of recent years, such as quantum computing and neuromorphic computing, and who are enthusiastic about the functionality and potential applications of various microchip technologies (CMOS, GaN technology, nano optics, etc.).
Graduates will be qualified to carry out independent research and qualified to fill leading positions in critical industrial sectors. With a focus on microelectronics engineering in your studies, you are especially qualified to apply your knowledge in leading international microchip foundries or to enter the rapidly growing field of quantum technology research. But “Microelectronics Engineering” also provides particularly relevant expertise for other possible career paths e.g. in the automotive industry, in the medical engineering industry or the IT and software industry.
