CHYLA & SIENA reveal scaling-up opportunities of hybrid-electric propulsion in aviation

Two ambitious Clean Sky 2 projects associated with pure electric, hybrid-electric and hydrogen powertrain architectures, called CHYLA and SIENA, have succeeded in reducing uncertainties and bringing clarity to the scalability and limitations of novel propulsion and energy paradigms.

CHYLA (Credible HYbrid-eLectric Aircraft) ran from December 2020 until May 2023 with €837 000 of EU funding. The project was coordinated by Delft University of Technology, supported by Technische Universität Braunschweig and the University of Southampton.
