Jewish Political Identity and Jewish Migration from Kałuszyn to Paris

Since the Declaration of the Rights of Man (1789), France has promised universal rights yet inconsistently lived up to those ideals. Polish Jews arriving in France in the early 20th century tested this commitment and the expansiveness of French hospitality. This talk examines the migration of Jews from Kałuszyn, Poland to France, asking how migrants’ political identity and sense of community changed as they arrived as strangers in a strange land. This microhistory is designed to illustrate the importance and vitality of political ideas in the history of migration.
