As part of the EAGruMo project, our team has installed several precipitation collectors at different altitudes in the Harz Mountains over the past few days. We want to use these collectors to study stable water isotopes in precipitation.
Why are we researching this?
When it rains, a large part of the water flows directly off the surface. However, we are interested in the proportion that seeps into the ground, travels underground through the rock and finally emerges in the Ernst-August-Stollen. We want to better understand these underground water movements.
Since the isotopic signature of precipitation varies with altitude, this is an interesting approach to exploring these underground waterways. Our one-year measurement campaign will reveal whether and to what extent we can detect this in our system.
