Gropiusstadt in Berlin, Wohnpark Alterlaa in Vienna - large housing complexes from the 1960s and 1970s are contemporary witnesses of late modernism, increasingly coming into the focus of architects and urban planners.

The Weststadt in Braunschweig, developed as a satellite city, is an example of a large-scale settlement from this period. What was once conceived as the city of the future has shortcomings in terms of urban qualities and diversity of use in today's understanding of city.

In the URBAN LAB WESTSTADT, we would like to discover with you the potentials of this large-scale settlement, which is often stigmatized as a dormitory town, and to design spatial visions for a sustainable living for this part of Braunschweig. We are looking for spatial ideas for redensification and for a quarter in which living, working, leisure and retail are mixed. As aspiring architects and urban planners, we ask you to enhance a fantastic urban quarter in the west of Braunschweig by conceive cross-scale designs.

An exchange with citizens and the quarts management of the Weststadt is planned for the starting point of the course.
