At this year’s 7th European Summer School on Microfluidics (July 13–17, 2026) at University College London (UCL), which focused on bioprocess development and medical applications in microfluidics, the ibvt team once again supported the engaging course through a technical lecture, hands-on laboratory work, and a poster presentation. Biotechnology student Felix Kieborz presented his bachelor thesis to the EUROMBR consortium in a poster session, while Yvonne Göcke and Leon Pastwa supervised EUROMBR participants during laboratory experiments involving optical density measurements in a capillary-wave microreactor and oxygen transfer determination in a 3D-printed micro-bubble column reactor. Additionally, Rainer Krull delivered a lecture titled "Microbioreactors: Overview and applications."
Felix Kieborz was awarded with the prize of overall excellence for his poster with the title "Comparative characterization of affinity-based purification methods for nanobodies using column chromatography and functionalized magnetic particles" under the supervision of Jan-Angelus Meyer, PhD student in the project "Development of an innovative biotechnological process for the production and integrated separation of nanobodies using SPIONs (BioNanoSPION)" funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The ibvt congratulates on this outstanding award.
The EUROMBR training course was excellently organized by our UCL hosts, Marco Marques, Nicolas Szita, and their team from the Department of Biochemical Engineering. The event featured a mix of technical exchanges and in-depth discussions in the laboratories and at the poster sessions; additionally, a group dinner on a boat at "Number 90 Bar Hackney Wick" on the River Lee Navigation provided ample opportunity for networking and socializing.
The EUROMBR training course plays a vital role in fostering the next generation of scientists, combining theoretical knowledge with valuable practical experience. Young researchers take this opportunity to connect with leading experts in the field of MBR development and to build and expand their own scientific networks.
The 8th international EUROMBR training course will take place in 2027, either at Complutense University in Madrid (Spain) or once again at University College London (UK). The organizing committee will keep you updated.
