Bachelors courses and Staatsexamen

You can apply to study at the TU Braunschweig if your qualifications are sufficient for study at an university in your home country. This means:

• You must have completed secondary school.
• If there is a university entrance examination in your home country, you must have passed it successfully.

In some cases we may also require that you have studied at an accredited university in your home country or that you complete the Studienkolleg foundation course in Germany.

Masters courses

The minimum requirement for entry into a Masters course is a Bachelors degree in the same or a closely related subject. Additional qualifications may be required.

Application for a higher semester

If you have already completed an identical or similar course of study, you may also be able to apply for a higher semester. You will then have to submit detailed descriptions of your previous academic achievements with your application. The faculty will decide on the recognition of your achievements and determine from which semester you can continue your studies.

Application requirements for your home country

The application requirements are different for each country of origin. Detailed information on your country is available from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

DAAD database on admission requirements

Most of the courses offered at TU Braunschweig are taught in German. Therefore, when applying for a German-language degree programme, you must submit one of the following German language certificates by the application deadline:

• TestDaF with at least 4 points in each section of the test
• telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule
• DSH 2
• Sprachdiplom of the Kultusministerkonferenz (Stufe II)
• C2-Zertifikat of the Goethe Institute
• Feststellungsprüfung of the Studienkolleg

For non-restricted degree programmes, you only need to prove that you are attending at least a German course at level B2 at the time of application. For enrolment, you must submit one of the above-mentioned German language certificates.

Unfortunately, enrolment is not possible without this language certificate!

English-taught and bilingual degree programmes

Other language requirements must be met for the english-taught and bilingual degree programmes. The language of instruction for the international Master's programmes Artificial Intelligence for Molecular Sciences, Data Science, Quantum Technologies in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Solar System Physics is English. Therefore, you will need sufficient proof of English language proficiency for the application. If you have any questions, please contact the relevant degree programme coordinator directly.

For the bilingual degree programmes CSE: Computational Sciences in Engineering (Master) and Sustainable Engineering of Products and Processes (Bachelor), you can apply with proof of English language proficiency, but you must also submit proof of German language proficiency when applying.

If your certificates are formally not sufficient to study directly in Germany, in certain cases there is the possibility to attend the Studienkolleg (preparatory college) in Germany to obtain a university entrance qualification.

The Studienkolleg (preparatory college) serves as preparation for your chosen degree programme. It usually lasts two semesters and is concluded with the Feststellungsprüfung (final exam of the Studienkolleg). If you pass the final exam, you will receive the Feststellungszeugnis (final certificate of the Studienkolleg). Together with your previous educational certificates from your home country, the Feststellungszeugnis constitutes your university entrance qualification. The Feststellungszeugnis, thus, confirms that you meet the formal and linguistic requirements for studying in Germany.

The application for the Studienkolleg always takes place via the university at which you would like to study after having completed the Studienkolleg. Please keep in mind that TU Braunschweig can only register you for the admission procedure at the Lower Saxony Studienkolleg in Hannover.

Admission procedure

Before beginning with your studies at the Studienkolleg, you must take an entrance exam. Please note that TU Braunschweig will only register you for the admission procedure at the Studienkolleg. The Studienkolleg Hannover decides whether you will be invited to take the entrance exam.

The admission procedure takes place in two stages. After you have applied at TU Braunschweig and have received the information that you have been registered at the Studienkolleg, you send your German certificate to the Studienkolleg Hannover. On the basis of the certificates submitted, the Studienkolleg compiles a ranking list, which is used to decide who will take part in the entrance exam. The invitations to the entrance exam are sent directly by the Studienkolleg Hannover.

If you are invited to the entrance exam, you will take the entrance exam according to your chosen core course. This core course enables you to study your chosen degree programme after having completed the Studienkolleg. Depending on your previous education, you may only be able to complete certain core courses at the Studienkolleg.

Core Courses

The Studienkolleg offers the following core courses to prepare students for their studies:

• T-course for technical, mathematical and scientific degree programmes (except biology)
• M-course for medical and biological degree programmes
• W-course for business and social science degree programmes
• G/S course for humanities and language-related degree programmes

The core course you must take depends on your previous education and your chosen degree programme you want to study after having completed the Studienkolleg.

After the preparatory year, you will take the final exam (Feststellungsprüfung) in one of the above-mentioned core courses. With this final exam (Feststellungsprüfung) you have a subject-specific university entrance qualification and you can study all degree programmes that correspond to the core course you have completed.

How do I apply for the Studienkolleg?

You can apply for the Studienkolleg directly via our application portal.

To the application portal

Applicants for the Studienkolleg have to select "Studienkolleg" as their degree in the application system. You can then select the degree programme you would like to study after the Studienkolleg under "Course of study ". Please note that it is not possible to apply for the 2-subjects bachelor for the Studienkolleg. If you would like to study a 2-subject bachelor’s programme after the Studienkolleg, please select a closely related degree programme. If you would like to take the G/S core course at the Studienkolleg, please select the Educational Sciences programme.

Application deadlines

• Application for the winter semester (beginning in October): 15 April – 31 May
• Application for the summer semester (beginning in April): 15 October – 30 November

Language requirements

Applicants for the Studienkolleg must proof at least level B1 of German language proficiency at the time of application. The Studienkolleg Hannover will make a preliminary selection of applicants who will be admitted to the entrance exam on the basis of the German language certificates submitted. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you apply with a German level higher than B1, as there is little chance that you will be admitted by the Studienkolleg to the entrance exam with a B1 certificate.

Only the following certificates will be accepted:

Onset, TestDaf, DSH, DSD I, DSD II, Telc, Telc Hochschule, Goethe certificates, ÖSD certificates, Unicert, IB German, IIK Göttingen, certificates from TU Clausthal and certificates from TU Braunschweig

A complete application usually includes the following documents:

• Your curriculum vitae
• A copy of your latest German language certificate
• If you are applying for a Bachelors or Staatsexamen course:
  copies and translations of your school leaving certificates
• If your home country requires a university entrance exam:
  copies and translations of your exam results
• If you have already studied at a university:
  copies and translations of your university certificates (transcript of records) with all subjects studied, including marks
• If you are already enrolled at a German university:
  certificate of enrolment
• Receipt for payment of your assessment fee (e.g. online payment receipt)

The required documents will depend on your course of study, home country and educational background. At the end of the online application you will find a personal checklist for your application documents. Please always refer to this list!

TU Braunschweig charges a fee of 75 Euro for the assessment of foreign qualifications which you have to pay when applying. Detailed information on payment procedures is provided in the online application process.

You only have to pay the assessment fee once, also if you are applying for several programs. Please make sure that you attach the proof of payment to each application.

You are exempt from the assessment fee, if:

• the Language Centre at TU Braunschweig or the VHS Braunschweig has issued you an application confirmation for your visa application,
• you receive a German Bachelor Degree within a Dual Bachelor Degree-Programme
• you have already paid the assessment fee for a previous application to TU Braunschweig. Please provide your prior application number.
• you received a scholarship from a national German scholarship provider (e.g. DAAD),
• you are already enrolled at TU Braunschweig as a degree seeking student and are applying for a different course of study,
• your documents have already been assessed by the German Ministry of Education (in Germany).

Once we receive your application we will start to examine your documents. You can check the current status of your application at any time in the online application portal.

• Letters of acceptance for Bachelors courses with unrestricted admission are generally sent 4 to 6 weeks after the application deadline.
• Letters of acceptance for Masters courses and Bachelors courses with restricted admission will be sent shortly thereafter.

There are two types of acceptance:

• If you receive an unconditional acceptance, you may directly begin your studies at the TU Braunschweig.
• If you receive a conditional acceptance, you must fulfil any further requirements, such as making up certain modules in the first two semesters.

Your letter of acceptance is not valid for a later semester!
