Digital gameplay environments such as Minecraft or the open-source variant Minetest (also known as “Luanti”) are regularly used beyond their playful functions to set up test environments and develop prototypes. This makes them particularly exciting in teaching in connection with approaches such as design thinking, which involves the systematic development and testing of innovative products or services.
During Learning Nugget #13 on January 29, 2026, speakers Varinia Wittholz and Dr. Michael Meyer from the Institute for Information Systems at TU Braunschweig will first provide an overview of design thinking, emphasizing the importance of prototyping, before giving an insight into the Minetest (Luanti) software. They will present a concrete application using an example from teaching at the Institute for Information Systems at TU Braunschweig. After the presentation, participants are invited to discuss the extent to which digital prototyping in teaching promotes creativity, understanding, and collaboration among students.
Learning Nuggets are designed for teachers of all disciplines. In 45 minutes, participants gain insight into the following topics:

With its Learning Nugget event series, the Digitale Lehre Hub Niedersachsen offers a concise format with application-oriented insights into topics related to digital teaching, cooperation, and collaboration at universities. In these 45-minute nuggets, you receive concrete ideas for your teaching based on two practical application scenarios. The nuggets are designed by various experts from universities in Lower Saxony as well as external speakers. Afterwards, participants have time to try out and exchange ideas, as well as an opportunity to network. The format is aimed at teachers of all disciplines who want to convey their content more effectively and motivatingly. Ideas are collected, discussed, and developed further in an open exchange of experiences. The event series has been running since 2025 and was originally established by the Co3Learn joint project.
I experience the Learning Nugget as an open and inspiring space for teachers that allows them to observe how others structure their teaching, what tools they use, and what challenges they face. I am thrilled by how many dedicated teachers are eager to try new things and at the same time openly share what really works in practice and what doesn't. This mixture of honesty, curiosity, and joint development makes Learning Nuggets exactly the right place for modern university teaching.
Learning Nugget sessions are exclusively live and not recorded to create an atmosphere that feels both safe and protected. Thus, there are no videos or written records of previous sessions. Instead, you can find an overview of discussed topics and their respective speakers here. You are welcome to contact them directly for further discussion.
