In this thesis at IWF, PVD coating processes will be analysed from a life cycle engineering perspective, with a focus on upscaling from lab to in-line industrial scale and understanding the resulting changes in energy and resource demand. Based on literature data and existing measurements, a calculation model will be developed that combines basic physical relationships with empirical correlations and links key process parameters to energy and resource use. The work will concentrate on energy intensive steps like metal heating and evaporation for different alloys, the behaviour of the vacuum generation system and relevant auxiliary units, so that the influence of upscaling on overall process efficiency can be systematically evaluated.
The exact task definition will be agreed individually.
