Investigating Environmental Impacts of Lithium-ion Battery Production through Mathematical LCA Models
Are you passionate about environmental sustainability and interested in the growing field of battery technology? We are currently seeking a dedicated and motivated student to conduct groundbreaking research on the factors contributing to the environmental impacts of lithium-ion battery production.

In the quest for a sustainable future, the motivation behind this research lies in promoting absolute sustainability. By understanding the environmental impacts of lithium-ion battery production, we can make informed decisions towards optimizing processes, reducing negative externalities, and fostering a circular economy. The outcomes of this study will help policymakers, industries, and researchers strive for absolute sustainability in battery technologies and beyond.

Thesis Objective:

The primary objective of this thesis is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the environmental implications associated with lithium-ion battery manufacturing. The study will focus on developing mathematical Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) models to assess the various stages involved in battery production and quantifying their environmental footprints.

Key Research Focus:

Understanding Factors Contributing to Environmental Impacts: The work delves deep into the various factors influencing the environmental impacts of lithium-ion battery production. This will involve investigating raw material extraction, manufacturing processes, energy consumption, and recycling.

Development of Mathematical LCA Models: The thesis will emphasize creating sophisticated mathematical LCA models that enable a detailed evaluation of each life cycle stage. This will allow for a comprehensive assessment of the battery production process and its environmental ramifications.

Utilization of the Python Library lca_algebraic: To facilitate the modelling process, the student will be utilizing the Python library "lca_algebraic." This library offers a wide range of tools and functions to construct and analyse LCA models effectively.

Forecasting the Environmental Impacts of Battery Giga Factories and Achieving Absolute Sustainability Targets
Are you passionate about safeguarding our planet's future? Do you want to play a vital role in shaping sustainable technological advancements? This student thesis aims to explore the environmental impacts of battery giga factories and their potential for achieving absolute sustainability targets.

Project Overview

In this thesis, we will delve into the pressing need for a comprehensive understanding of the future environmental impacts of battery giga factories.

Key Objectives

Investigate SSP (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways) scenarios: The thesis aims to assess different SSP scenarios to determine if they can meet the targets set by absolute sustainability. Understanding the implications of different socio-economic pathways will be pivotal in crafting feasible strategies for a sustainable future.

PREMISE Python Package: The project will utilize the PREMISE Python package for modelling and forecasting the impacts of future battery production.

Identify Mitigation Potential: Investigate the potential for absolute reduction in the impacts of future battery systems.

By participating in this student thesis, you will:

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of renewable energy technologies and environmental sustainability.
  • Gain expertise in using the PREMISE Python package for simulation and forecasting.
  • Make a tangible impact on the future of battery production by identifying mitigation strategies.

If you are enthusiastic about environmental conservation, renewable energy, and sustainable development, this thesis offers an opportunity to contribute to the development of sustainable mobility solutions.

Utilizing Multi-Regional Input-Output Models for Absolute Environmental Sustainability Assessments of Industries

In our rapidly changing world, it's more crucial than ever to limit the environmental impacts of products and services to within the Earth's carrying capacities. Our research delves into how to accurately assign and assess these limits using advanced MRIO models like Exiobase 3.

Key Highlights:

  • Define Environmental Boundaries: Understand how concepts like planetary boundaries and carbon budgets can be downscaled to products and industries.
  • Assign Safe Operating Spaces (SOS): Learn how to calculate and assign specific environmental budgets to 163 industries and 200 products across 44 countries and 5 regions.
  • Prioritize Mitigation Efforts: Identify which industries urgently need to reduce their environmental impacts and discover countries excelling in sustainable practices.
  • Future Implications: Explore the challenges of applying this approach to companies and products, and contribute to shaping the future of environmental sustainability.

Why This Research Matters: By developing a consistent framework for assessing the absolute sustainability of industries, our research offers guidelines for prioritizing environmental actions globally. This study not only highlights the industries most in need of change but also showcases regions leading the way in sustainable practices.

If you are enthusiastic about environmental conservation, renewable energy, and sustainable development, this thesis offers an opportunity to contribute to the development of sustainable mobility solutions.
