Energy saving measures for the winter term 2023/2024

Status: 01. September 2023

Where can I find references to the energy-saving measures, savings results and further information?

The campaign website

The campaign website www.tu-braunschweig.de/en/energy-saving brings together all the relevant content on the topic, as well as the savings results of the past months. The information portal also provides official letters and valuable handouts: https://lnk.tu-bs.de/iBEbJ6

Video messages and circulars from the university management

The university management will provide information through the known channels with messages and announcements tailored to the target groups. The videos and letters are also made available on the website or the information portal.

Diversity of media

Information on energy-saving will be made available through various formats including Instagram, the weekly newsletter “Die Woche” and Digital Town Halls. Information posters and handouts will also be used raise awareness on the topic.

How will the energy-saving measures affect teaching and learning?

Opening hours of the University Library

From Monday to Friday after 19:00 and at weekends heating will be only be switched on in the new building area of the UB. This will allow us to provide more than 300 study spaces even during the off-peak hours and to meet the calculated demand during the examination periods. Information on opening hours can be found on the UB website: https://www.tu-braunschweig.de/en/ub.

If there is a shortage of learning spaces, we will make up the shortage.

An overview of the study spaces can be found here: https://www.tu-braunschweig.de/en/learning-spaces.

Bundling of events in the Audimax

The use of the Audimax will be planned to avoid gaps and to avoid heating when they are not in use.

No external in the Audimax by external parties

Due to the energy-intensive operation of the building, external events are not permitted during the heating period. However, they can be rescheduled for the summer term.

Events not related to research and teaching may only take place in the Audimax in exceptional cases, and then only in time slots adjacent to the scheduled heating periods.

Exceptions are possible for TU events in special individual cases. These should only take place in the hours to adjacent the lectures. Room requests are forwarded by the Lecture Room Allocation Office (Hörsaalvergabe) to the core team of the Advisory Committee on Supply Security for a decision.

Consolidation of weekend block courses in rooms in seminar buildings BI.85 and BI.97 (North Campus)

In order to make weekend block courses as energy efficient as possible, they will be held in rooms that can be heated efficiently. This avoids the need to inefficiently heat large buildings for individual events. As was the case last winter term, all block sessions will therefore be held on the North Campus.

Sports Centre – Campus Gym remains open

The CampusGym, the fitness area in the TU sports hall on Beethovenstraße, has a good energy conservation concept so that it can remain open during the winter term.

Will the winter break be extended?

The TU Braunschweig will generally be closed for the turn of the year 2023/2024 from 27. December 2023 to 5. January 2024

For the period from 27. to 29. December 2023 as well as for the extended period from 2. to 3. January 2024, the employees can, in consultation with their superiors, decide to take a holiday, a flexible working time or a combination of both.

For the period from 4. to 5. January 2024, employees may, in consultation with their managers, choose one of the following arrangements or a combination thereof:

  1. 2 days of mobile work, unless they are already on holiday or on flexitime.
  2. 2 days of working in the office (reduced temperatures as on weekends), if you are not already on holiday or flexitime.

For further information on the introduction of working hours, please refer to the Human Resources Department's circular on the 2023/2024 closure period, which can also be found on the information portal.

What measures apply to the heating operation?

Heating to start 1. October, possibly later if weather conditions are good

TU Braunschweig aims to start heating on 1. October. Depending on the weather, we will try to delay the start even further.

Regulation of heating temperatures according to the current regulations

According to the current workplace regulations, the room temperature in the offices this winter is 20°C (light sitting work) or 19°C (light standing work or medium sitting work). 20°C is achieved by setting the thermostat to level 3.

Extending the hours of reduced heating operation (normal operation Monday to Thursday from 07:00 to 17:00, Friday from 07:00 to 12:00).

Even before the energy crisis, the heating at TU Braunschweig was turned down at night and on weekends. In winter term 2022/23, the period of reduced operation has been extended. In addition, the weekend lowering will start earlier. From 07:00 to 17:00 and on Fridays until 12:00, the heating systems will be in normal operation. When the heating system turns down, offices will slowly cool down.

Adjusting the heating thermostats

It is still important to adjust the thermostats manually. As a rule of thumb, you can reach 20°C with a thermostat setting of 3. At the end of the day or when you going to be away for a longer time (weekends), you can significantly increase the savings effect by turning the thermostat valve down to 2 (16°C) or 1 (12°C), also depending on how long it takes the room to heat up.

What measures apply to the operation of laboratories?

Limiting of ventilation operation in laboratories

Ventilation systems are particularly energy-intensive. The restriction of ventilation in the laboratories is organised by the users themselves, taking into account occupational health and safety, and implemented with the support of the facilities management. By limiting the use of these very energy-intensive areas, we were able to make significant savings during the last heating period. Please note that the use and operating concepts are the responsibility of the laboratory managers.

Is it allowed to use fan heaters or air conditioning systems in the office?

The use of fan heaters, air conditioners or similar equipment is not permitted unless it is necessary for operational reasons.

What other measures are taken centrally?
  • Switching off the lighting in the dome of the Haus der Wissenschaft.
  • Decentralised drinking water heating systems will be shut down.
