Prof. Dr. Hans-Christoph Schmidt am Busch

Hans-Christoph Schmidt am Busch studied philosophy, political science, sociology and economics in Frankfurt, Montpellier, Münster and Hagen. He received a D.E.U.G., a Licence and a Maîtrise in philosophy from the University of Montpellier. During doctoral studies at the University of Münster, he wrote his dissertation on Hegel’s concept of work. Between 2004 and 2010, he was a research associate at the Institute for Social Research (Institut für Sozialforschung) in Frankfurt. He then received a Habilitation in philosophy from the University of Frankfurt with a monograph titled “Anerkennung” als Prinzip der Kritischen Theorie (“Recognition” as a Principle of Critical Theory). Between 2005 and 2010, Hans-Christoph Schmidt am Busch held a postdoctoral fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and conducted research in the United States at Northwestern University, Georgetown University and Columbia University. Between 2010 and 2013, he worked as a visiting professor (Vertretungsprofessor) at the Universities of Magdeburg, Münster and Vechta. After declining a chair at the University of Vechta, Hans-Christoph Schmidt am Busch became a professor of philosophy at the University of Braunschweig in 2013. In 2020 and 2021 he was a research fellow at Münster University’s “Exzellenzcluster Religion und Politik”. In 2023 Hans-Christoph Schmidt am Busch became a member of the Comité Scientifique du Collège international de philosophie.
