Vanessa Miriam Carlow studied architecture and urban design at TU Berlin, DE, and TU Delft, NL. She holds an MA in Urban Management from Erasmus University Rotterdam, NL, Copenhagen University, DK, Ca’ Fosçari Venice, IT, Antwerp University, BE, Autonomous University Barcelona, ESP and a PhD in Strategic Planning from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. 

 She is a licensed architect and planner, and co-founder of COBE in Copenhagen (2005) and COBE Berlin (2012), currently working under her own name (vanessacarlow.de). Her practice focuses urban design and architecture and has garnered prestigious prizes, including the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale for the Best National Pavilion (DK, 2006).

Since 2012 Vanessa Miriam Carlow has been heading the ISU - Institute for Sustainable Urbanism at TU Braunschweig. Based on mainly public research funding, the institute grew from four to almost 30 researchers, educators, PhD students and student assistants, today. Carlow’s research with the ISU - Institute for Sustainable Urbanism at Technische Universität Braunschweig explores strategies and tools for sustainable urban development. The team has recently opened the Spatial Analytics and Cross-disciplinary Experimentation Lab (SPaCE Lab at ISU) – a dedicated team and infrastructure for multidisciplinary postdigital urban research.

Carlow has lectured and taught at universities worldwide, including Penn State and Cornell University. In 2022 Carlow has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of VolkswagenFoundation, one of the largest private science foundations in Europe.

Grace Abou Jaoude is a research associate at the Institute for Sustainable Urbanism. She received her master’s degree in urbanism from TU Delft, the Netherlands, where her thesis focused on the spatial implications of automation on the Dutch horticulture sector. She was part of the Automated Landscapes project research team at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. Grace also holds a bachelor’s degree in landscape design from the American University of Beirut and has previously worked at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research.

As part of the junior research group, Grace’s work focuses on the ways in which policies and planning can support the integration of urban manufacturing in cities. Her research also addresses the modelling and analysis of urban areas to identify synergies that could lead to resource efficiencies and sustainable regions.

Yevheniia Berchul is a research associate at the Institute for Sustainable Urbanism. She gained a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a master's degree in urban planning from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv. She is part of the Deutsche Bundestiftung Umwelt Fellowship program for Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Her research focuses on the examination of methods to provide a comprehensive analysis of environmental challenges and dynamics in the context of conflicts.

Deepank Verma holds a Ph.D. in Urban Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. His doctoral research investigates the relationship between the individuals’ perception and urban surroundings. He received his undergraduate degree in Planning from the School of Planning and Architecture Bhopal, India, and a postgraduate degree in City planning from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India. He further works on deep learning applications specific to computer vision, audio analysis, and remote sensing. His research interests include Data mining, Machine Learning, Remote Sensing, Human perception, and Urban Design. He wishes to create tools for smart urban planning and development using IoT and Extended Reality (XR) setups.

Katja Knecht holds a Ph.D. in Media & Arts Technology from Queen Mary University of London, an M.Sc. in MediaArchitecture from Bauhaus-University Weimar and a Dipl.Ing. (FH) degree in Audio-Visual Media from Hochschule der Medien, Stuttgart. She has been conducting research at the intersection of media, technology, architecture and urban planning for over 10 years in Germany, the UK, and Singapore. Her research focusses on mediated spatial experiences and the human-centred design and development of digital systems to support participatory practices as well as design and decision-making processes in architecture and urban planning.

Katja joined ISU in November 2021 as a wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in the Industrial Symbiosis and Urban Factories (ISUrF) Hub project. Her research as part of the project focusses on the roles and integration of stakeholders in industrial and urban symbiosis processes. Further research interests include citizen participation in urban planning, virtual reality for urban design engagement and development, as well as human-centred design research in general.

Ryan Zeringue holds a M.A. in Advanced Urbanism from the Bauhaus University, Weimar (Germany) and Tongji University (China). His master‘s thesis investigated the relationship between street grid forms and walkability. He received his bachelors degree in Architecture from Louisiana State University (USA). He primarily works on TOPOI based analysis of urban and rural regions as well as interdisciplinary GIS based analysis. His research interests include Resiliance, Architecture, Disaster Planning, spatial analysis, and Urban Design. He joined ISU in November of 2018.
