On this page you will find everything you need to know about the Bachelor's degree programme in Mathematics.
The Bachelor's degree programme in Mathematics provides you with the basic mathematical knowledge that will enable you to take an analytical and structured approach to both mathematical and non-mathematical problems. You will develop mathematical skills and abilities that you will need for modelling and mathematically solving tasks in many areas of professional life. Procedures, models and methods from both ‘pure mathematics’ and ‘applied mathematics’ are taken into account. During the course of your studies, you will also practise the skills you have learnt on problems from the natural sciences or economics - you will choose a minor subject of your choice at the beginning of your studies.
The programme consists of the following three elements:
and is usually completed with 180 credit points.
The subject examinations take place during the course of study, mainly in written form, but also in oral form, in order to ensure rapid study and regular performance assessment.
In Mathematics, all students must first complete a compulsory programme of courses. This is followed by an advanced and elective area in which students select courses according to their interests. The degree programme concludes with the completion of a mathematical Bachelor's thesis.
As a Minor Subject, students can choose subjects such as computer science, physics, economics or engineering subjects such as mechanical or electrical engineering, depending on their interests. The exact allocation of credit points to the minor subject modules depends on the minor subject chosen. We will be happy to advise you on the minor subject at the start of your degree programme.
Interdisciplinary and action-oriented content characterises the Professionalisation Area. In addition to computer internships and mathematical seminars, in which students learn the basics of writing mathematical and technical texts, bibliography and excerpting as well as the fundamentals of scientific argumentation, students can also attend interdisciplinary and professional qualification courses depending on their study goals and previous knowledge.
Start of degree programme - current examination regulations (from WS 2018/19)
On the Bachelor's degree programme, we recommend a stay abroad from the fourth semester onwards. Recognition of credits, particularly in the elective area, is relatively simple; further information on the recognition procedure can be obtained from your study programme coordination office.
Information on possible partner universities can be found on the website of the International Office. Plan your semester abroad well in advance, as the application deadlines are approx. 5 (Erasmus, Europe) or 9 (rest of the world) months before the start of the semester abroad. Relevant information on formalities and funding opportunities can also be found on the website of the International Office. Please also look out for the monthly information events on Europe and overseas.
