Profil

Dr. Jan-Erik Leonhardt is currently serving as Acting Professor of English Language Teaching at TU Braunschweig (Winter Term 2025/26). He previously spent eight years at Goethe University Frankfurt, where he taught and researched English language education, while also working part-time as a secondary school teacher of English and German. His research focuses on film-based language education, the digital transformation of language teaching, and critical approaches to foreign language education. He is also passionate about bridging research and practice through science communication in English language teaching.

Titel Popular Series in English Language Education

This publication enables (future) English teachers to integrate series and serials into their classrooms. Introductory chapters explore the specificities of series and serials, define competence objectives, and identify key teaching methods. In the subsequent chapters, experts from the field present selected series and serials from various genres with in-depth analyses and practical teaching suggestions. Film Literacy im Englischunterricht: Eine Mixed-Methods-Studie zur Erhebung der Kompetenzen von Lernenden der Sekundarstufe I.
Titel Film Literacy im Englischunterricht

In this study, I examine the levels of film literacy among learners in grades 6, 8, and 10 in EFL classrooms. Using a mixed-methods approach, my study combines results from a questionnaire on the use of films (n=671), a competency test (n=626), and a group interview (n=36). Based on this data, I redefine the concept of film literacy, identify key predictors for learners’ film literacy, and provide evidence-based principles for film-based language teaching.
