Teaching English as a Foreign Language

English language education provides access to language, culture, literature, and media in a globally connected world. The ability to participate in foreign-language discourse, engage in cultural and literary learning, and critically reflect on digital media are key prerequisites for participation, mutual understanding, and democratic citizenship.

At the Technische Universität Braunschweig, English language education explores how English as a foreign language is taught and learned in school and university contexts. Our work is grounded in theory, informed by empirical research, and closely connected to educational practice. We combine current theories of foreign language education with both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Key areas of research include:

• makerspace learning and autonomous learning,

• cultural and literary learning,

• critical approaches to English language education and citizenship education,

• the digital transformation of English language teaching and the use of digital and audiovisual media in language education,

• inclusion in English language education,

• science communication in English language education.

In our teaching, we support prospective teachers in developing reflective and research-informed approaches to English language teaching. Through seminars and project-based learning opportunities, students are encouraged to experiment with innovative practices, engage in critical discussion, and develop their professional identity as future teachers of English.

English Language Education at TU Braunschweig sees itself as a place of dialogue – between research and school practice, between the university and society, and through collaboration with national and international partners in the field of language education.
