Internal Job Shadowings are structured, short-term (approximately one day) opportunities to gain insight into the work processes, roles, and procedures of other departments at TU Braunschweig. They enable employees to look beyond their own immediate scope of work—whether in administration, research, or within the faculties.
Through the direct exchange of knowledge, experiences, and practical ideas, we strengthen cross-departmental collaboration and foster a shared understanding and collaborative problem-solving.
At the same time, job shadowing contributes to personal development: new perspectives foster innovative ideas, a renewed team spirit, and lasting cohesion.
The internal job shadowing program was created as a prototype as part of the “Mit leichtem Gepäck” transformation project in the fall/winter of 2025. The prototype was developed by the “Support Instead of Control” team and was based on the following assumption: “We believe that job shadowing can significantly increase understanding of processes and working methods (...) This makes the distribution of roles and tasks understandable and tangible through concrete examples and personal interaction.”

The job shadowing is designed to be voluntary and free of bureaucratic hurdles for both hosts and interns. At the same time, there are administrative areas where spontaneous requests can create additional burdens on workflows; therefore, a planned approach to internships is preferred.
To make job shadowing possible in as many areas of the university as possible, there are therefore two different ways to participate.
The job shadowing is based on personal initiative and self-organization. Interested individuals should contact the desired department directly, in consultation with their advisor, and work together to agree on the date, duration, and focus of the job shadowing.
Organizational units submit their observation opportunities (dates, content, contact person). In the next step, the ZPE publishes these opportunities as part of the respective job shadowing rounds, for which interested parties can then register specifically.
Note: Internal Job Shadowing should be distinguished from job shadowing that is an integral part of the vocational training program at TU Braunschweig.
Job shadowing can be an excellent tool for onboarding or for aligning processes across departments. We therefore encourage both advisers and employees to utilize job shadowing in their day-to-day work and to discuss it as an opportunity for professional development, for example, during annual reviews.
Internal Job Shadowing can be divided into four phases:
1 – initiation
2 – preparation
3 – implementation
4 – reflection.
We have put together two checklists to help you carry out job shadowing sessions:
Checklist for Job Shadowers (in German)
Checklist for Hosts (in German)
We welcome your feedback to help us improve our Internal Job Shadowing!
