Active Recruitment

We support appointment procedures and find top talent for TU Braunschweig

With active recruitment, TU Braunschweig pursues the goal of attracting top talent for our further development. Active recruitment involves the targeted search for and approaching of potential candidates in the course of filling vacancies (especially professorships); it is an effective means of competing for the best minds in the increasingly competitive global science market. TU Braunschweig is one of only a few German universities to have  anchored active recruitment firmly in its organisational structure by creating a dedicated position. This service relieves the burden on the faculties and creates an important interface for joint organisation.

Why active recruitment?

Increasing the attractiveness of TU Braunschweig for students and researchers alike is a central goal: the successful recruitment of top academic staff from Germany and abroad has an impact on the reputation and future of TU Braunschweig, as professors play a significant role in determining the university's academic orientation and profile and thus influence its attractiveness for students and early career researchers.

Aims of active recruitment

  • It is the declared goal of TU Braunschweig to appoint more highly qualified women and international academics to professorships and thus contribute to strengthening research and teaching.
  • This also includes achieving gender equality, especially in subjects in which one gender is strongly underrepresented (especially in the STEM subjects, these are usually women; if men are the underrepresented gender in a specific subject, they are specifically targeted)

Procedure

  • As part of the appointment process, potential candidates for advertised professorships from Germany and abroad are identified through systematic research in databases and networks. The search is carried out by the Active Recruitment Officer in consultation with the Appointment Committee.  The Chair of the Appointment Committee receives suggestions for personally contacting prospective candidates whom he/she can then  approach with the aim of  encouraging them to apply to TU Braunschweig.
  • Through personal contact with members of the Appointment Committee, candidates get an impression of TU Braunschweig as an attractive employer, which, ideally, will motivate them to  apply for the advertised position.

Focus

  • TU Braunschweig is focusing on recruiting more female professors to fulfil its strategic goals: 30% female professors by 2025; this is also stipulated in the Lower Saxony coalition agreement (50% female professors for new appointments). To date, the proportion of female professors is 24%, with only 18%  in the highest W 3 /C 4 pay grade (2022).
  • The aim is therefore to increase the proportion of women in professorships, particularly in the STEM subjects. At the same time, the aim is to recruit international academics for professorships in order to increase the international visibility of TU Braunschweig.
