ERC Funding

EU funding for excellent researchers

The European Research Council (ERC) is the European Commission’s initiative to foster excellent researchers and innovative research aims. The assigned ERC Grants are part of the research framework programme since 2007. For the period 2021 - 2027, the research framework programme called Horizon Europe has been adopted.

ERC awards individual grants for outstanding scientists in an EU-wide competitive procedure. Applicants are addressed in three funding lines according to their personal career level. The focus is on basic and visionary research in all disciplines. Scientific excellence is the decisive funding criterion in all funding lines. 100% of direct costs and 25% overhead are coverd within all funding lines.

Funding Criteria

All funding lines will be evaluated based on the following quality criteria:

  • Innovative character and impact of the research project: relevance of the topic and its significance for current challenges; innovation and high risk/high gain potential
  • Scientific approach and selection of methods: accuracy of the methodological framework, development of new methods, comprehensibility of time and work plan

Since each grant is person-related, the applicant’s acquired scientific expertise is subject of evaluation. The achievement will be (among others) scored based on the number of top publications, invited talks and former funding.

Support by the Research Services

The team of the Research Services and European Office will be happy to support you in all areas of the application process. This includes strategic and administrative advice and support as well as preparation/training and monitoring of interviews.

Support for Applicants at TU Braunschweig

In order to significantly increase the number of ERC grants, TU Braunschweig has put together a team, who provides advice and institutional support to applicants. Furthermore, TU Braunschweig offers a concrete financial incentive to bring along an ERC grant to TU Braunschweig.
