Why Information System Technology?

Who would think of a computer when looking at a mobile phone or a sports car? And yet both, invisible on the outside, are controlled by very powerful microcomputers that enable modern mobile communication or powerful yet economical engines and outstanding driving characteristics.

The same applies to airplanes, robots or medical equipment. In all modern technical systems computers set the tone, imperceptibly for the technical layman. They help to save energy, reduce risk, increase comfort and reliability. They enable ever new functions, set trends, as in the case of the mobile phone.

These embedded systems and their complex software have little in common with the usual PCs. Knowledge of software alone is not enough to understand and design these systems. A solid engineering education is also necessary, which allows the possibilities of the new technology to be exploited meaningfully and responsibly.

We teach both in an innovative course of studies that was one of the first of its kind to be developed in close cooperation between electrical engineering and computer science.

General information on the Bachelor's programme

Microcomputers in technical systems are invisible to the user. Nevertheless, they are very powerful components that often work much more efficiently than a PC. Technical systems are becoming more and more complex. Even now, there are hardly any modern industrial products that can be implemented competitively without microcomputers and software. Information technology is an extreme growth area, with the equipment market even having a far greater market share than the software market. Information system technology is aimed at this rapidly growing, promising market. Here, engineers are sought who can combine in-depth software knowledge from computer science with sound knowledge from electrical engineering. The course has been designed in consultation with representatives from industry - especially telecommunications and the automotive industry. With a consistent interdisciplinary orientation, both the Bachelor's and Master's programmes take into account practical requirements that go beyond the mere imparting of knowledge. The interdisciplinary course of studies teaches the basics of electrical engineering, information technology and computer science required for the examination of information technology systems. In addition, the first specialisations are acquired in three elective areas, which are arranged according to thematic aspects. Soft skills", which play an increasing role in professional life, in particular the ability to work in a team and presentation techniques, are systematically trained. In this way one becomes fit for the professional practice, in which increasingly in interdisciplinary teams one works.

Qualification goals

Bachelor graduates have sound knowledge and skills for the operational-analytical processing of tasks in the field of information technology systems. They are able to identify problems, communicate them to their colleagues and accompany the problem with their application knowledge.

The application of the methods and knowledge learned in the course of study is carried out in the Bachelor's thesis, which is usually integrated into one of the numerous interdisciplinary projects of the institutes involved in the course. In addition, further key qualifications that are important for professional life are acquired during the course of study. This is achieved by attending interdisciplinary courses in which, for example, knowledge of project management or language skills are taught, as well as team projects and seminar lectures in which presentation techniques are practiced.

The Bachelor's programme is free of admission.

In the Bachelor's programme, you choose one of the five elective areas (specialisations) offered. In the special part of the examination regulations for the Bachelor you will find a list of all options.

Within the framework of the Joint Study Profile Media Studies of the TU Braunschweig (TU BS) and the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig (HBK), the Information System Technology (BA of Arts IST), which can be selected as a 2-subject Bachelor's degree course in Media Studies, is located at the FK EITP. This concerns the content related to the studies such as the examination regulations, the presentation of the selectable modules and the registration for the examination.
Since the BA of Arts IST is part of the joint MeWi.-2Fächer BA with the HBK, please note that the examination office responsible for you is located at the HBK.

General information on the Master Programme

With this study program, which was introduced in 2000 (initially as a diploma program, since winter semester 2006/2007 as a bachelor and master program), the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Physics and the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Fakultät, Departm. Computer Science, have introduced an interdisciplinary combined course of studies exactly at the interface between computer science and electrical engineering.

The course is located in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Physics and is supervised by this faculty. Teaching content from both participating faculties is integrated together. In Information Systems Engineering, the central focus is on the design of highly specialized hardware-software systems of high complexity. Such systems can be found, for example, in mobile phones or luxury cars.

Software knowledge and sound technical knowledge are equally required for these systems. Both are imparted in the study of information system technology. The Master's programme is based on the Bachelor's programme in Information Systems Engineering or a comparable subject. In addition to mathematical basics, which are to be covered in the first semester, in-depth courses from the three elective areas known from the bachelor's programme are taken. The list of courses in the Master's programme is considerably more extensive than in the Bachelor's programme and the content of the additional courses offered is also more demanding, corresponding to the scientific-oriented Master's programme. This is associated with an intensive introduction to the current scientific issues at the increasingly broad interface between electrical engineering and information technology on the one hand and computer science on the other. Graduates of the Master's programme have problem-solving competence and put it into practice with their specialist knowledge. With their interdisciplinary knowledge, they also have an excellent basis, which can be of great use with regard to later project management tasks or a career in management.

Admission requirements

You have obtained your Bachelor's degree at a German university. (There are special application procedures and deadlines for international applicants. Detailed information can be obtained from the International-Office.)

A special admission procedure must be followed in the Master's programme. The following application deadlines apply for this degree programme:

    for the winter semester from 01 June to 15 July
    for the summer semester from 01 December to 15 January

Industrial internship

An industrial internship is a compulsory part of the Master's programme. Contents and requirements for the internship are described in the internship guidelines of the faculty.
