Tobias Mertens studied civil engineering at Lübeck University of Applied Sciences from 2019 to 2024. During and following his studies, he worked as a site manager at STRABAG AG from 2024 to 2026. Since September 1, 2026, he has been a research assistant at the Braunschweig Pavement Engineering Centre at TU Braunschweig under the direction of Prof. Michael P. Wistuba. In 2025, he was awarded a prize by the Vereinigung der Straßenbau- und Verkehrsingenieure Schleswig-Holstein e. V. for his master's thesis on the aging resistance of bitumen-additive mixtures for viscosity-modified asphalt.
