Turkish is one of about 40 Turkic languages spoken as a mother tongue by 180 million people over a vast area in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe as well as Western, Central and Northern Asia. Partial communication is possible between the speakers of most Turkic languages.
The Turkish language serves as an official language in Turkey, in Northern Cyprus and, in addition to Greek, in the Republic of Cyprus, as well as a local official language in Macedonia, Romania and Kosovo.
Today, Turkish is spoken by about 65 million native speakers and about 20 million second language speakers. In Germany, it has about two million speakers.
