Rent a Laptop

From now on, all students at the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Fakultät can borrow a laptop for working on the practical and exercise tasks that arise in their course of study on a semester basis. This is especially intended to make it easier for students who cannot afford a laptop to participate and work on the exercises on site.

For this purpose, 16 devices are available at the Institute for Application Security (IAS). These can be borrowed by students in consultation with Tobias Jost (e-mail, Informatikzentrum Mühlenpfordtstraße 23, room 271) until the beginning of the next semester. An extension is possible, provided that there are no students waiting for an available device.

A needs assessment will currently not be done. Private use of the equipment is not covered by the rental agreement.

Technical equipment

  • Dell Latitude 5320
  • CPU Intel I5-1135G7 (4 cores, max. 4.2 Ghz)
  • 8 GiB RAM Integrated Intel Iris XE graphics adapter
  • 512 GiB NVMe PCIe SSD incl. small carrying case & power supply

The current Ubuntu Linux LTS version is pre-installed upon delivery. This is slightly adapted and supplemented with software needed for the "Programming 1" exercise. Additionally, the eduroam setup wizard is prominently integrated into the sidebar. Further suggestions for an adapted basic installation are gladly accepted via email!

Except for changes in the BIOS/UEFI, there are no technical restrictions on the use of the laptop. The creation of a user account with full local superuser permissions happens at the first boot of the device. The installation of another operating system is also possible. However, we do not offer a necessary license or support for this.

Lending & Return

Please contact Tobias Jost by e-mail if you are interested in borrowing. Please send the following data:

  • Matriculation number
  • Your full name & address
  • Desired loan period
  • If applicable, desired date for issue

The issue and return will take place after signing a loan contract at the Institute for Application Safety:

Tobias Jost
Institute for Application Safety (IAS) - Room 271
Mühlenpfordtstraße 23 (Computer Science Center)

Please bring your student ID with you. The contract will be in German.

The laptop must be returned by the end of the loan period - an early return is of course also possible.

When returning the laptop, all data will be deleted and the laptop will be reset to its original state. A data backup does not occur! Please back up all important data before returning the device!

Damage / Loss

Please report any damage that occurs during the loan period so that it can be repaired or the device can be replaced.

In the event of loss of the laptop or damage that goes beyond what can be expected from use (especially in the case of negligence or willful damage), the loan may be passed on to Dept. 11 (Legal Department) for further clarification and settlement.
