Completed Projects

Autonomous Driving in Newspapers and Magazines
In the module "Scientific methods of media usage, reception and impact research" during the summer semester of 2017 the students of the master's program in "Media Technology and Communication" deepened their knowledge of quantitative content analysis. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr Monika Taddicken and Dr Anne Reif, the students analysed over 500 articles on the scientific topic of "autonomous driving" from national newspapers, regional local newspapers in the area of automotive companies and automotive magazines. Following the frame elements defined by Entman (1993), an extensive codebook was developed to determine, for example, how often problems (e.g., loss of individual self-determination, safety gaps) or benefits (e.g., mobility/comfort) of autonomous driving were addressed. In the module "Data Analysis in Communication Research" (following winter semester of 2017/2018), cluster analysis was conducted to identify different frames of media coverage.
Emotionality and Emotionalization Processes
Research on Emotionality and Emotionalization Processes within Online Comment Sections on Journalistic Articles of the local newspaper Braunschweiger Zeitung.
KlimaRez
What is the significance of the phenomenon of climate change from the perspective of the recipients, especially considering the complexity, abstractness and uncertainty of the knowledge conveyed in media communication? In recent years, media coverage of climate change has increased worldwide. In addition, a (partial) public debate on climate change is also taking place online, especially in social media. Using different theoretical approaches as well as different methodological approaches, this project explores how media reception, media appropriation and online use take place on the topic of climate change and in what consequences regarding their media effects this results.
Second Screen Usage
Second screen usage is increasing. Previous studies mainly refer to parallel TV and Internet usage. In contrast, the role of second screen use in a professional context - especially during presentations at a scientific conference - is examined in this project. As a student project, a survey and observations were conducted during the annual conference of the communication science division "Digital Communication" in Braunschweig, Germany. The results were presented at the annual meeting of the division in Erfurt, Germany in 2018.
Selection and Reception of Online Information
"Are you still searching or are you already reading?" Factors influencing the selection and reception of online information - an explorative eye tracking study.
TOM-Project
TOM Trans-O-MIMM

The project, which is being carried out in collaboration with the Peter L. Reichertz Institute for Medical Informatics (PLRI) in cooperation with Schattauer Verlag in Stuttgart, deals with the publication of open access scientific articles. It is part of the DFG-funded "Trans-O-MIM" project, a project to transform an established subscription-based scientific journal into an open access-based one ("Methods of Information in Medicine"). The aim is to investigate reception and publication practices and motivations via multiple survey stages in order to develop a successful transformation concept on this basis.

Make Your School
Make Your School is a project initiated by Wissenschaft im Dialog. Making, creating and teamwork are the key components of Make Your School. The project supports two- or three-day hackday events in schools all over Germany. During the hackdays students develop ideas and design solutions to improve their school with technical and digital tools. Make Your School offers students the opportunity to acquire skills that are essential for dealing with digital media. The Institute of Communication Science at the Technische Universität Braunschweig is providing the accompanying scientific research for Make Your School since February 2018. The accompanying research employs both qualitative and quantitative research methods to address the questions of which aspects of digital media literacy are generally relevant and which different definitions, views and understandings exist regarding media competencies.
