About EPIC

English version

EPIC (Everyday People, Incredible Courage) is an international school e-mapping project for upper primary & secondary school (10-16) all over the world. The project uses a Padlet to map picture books & graphic novels about those who helped save the lives of Jewish people during the Holocaust and the lives of others persecuted during this time in history.

This project aims to share and remember people who resisted (Jewish & Non-Jewish) and the values they represent such as: social courage, allyship, friendship. The map visualises the geographic spread of those who helped and resisted. EPIC is an initiative launched by Istoreto (Enrica Bricchetto & Federica Ceriani), TU Braunschweig (Tatia Gruenbaum & Carmen Becker), SmartEdu4All (Silvana Rampone) and NHL Stenden (Heike Tattje) to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2026.

The organisers hope that these stories of social courage and allyship will inspire teachers to take them into their classrooms and inspire children to choose humanity. We also hope that these stories will encourage children to engage with their local past ‘in order to build a bridge between memory and action, between history and hope for the future’ (UK Holocaust Memorial Day Trust 2026).

The picture books and the graphic novels, which are part of the EPIC map, could also provide an entry point to a project called ‘My Hometown’. This project was launched in 2024 under the UK IHRA Presidency and aims ‘to inspire schools around the world to discover and share stories that connect their hometown with the Holocaust and its legacy’. This project, too, bridges the past with the present and highlights ’the importance of linking local, national, and global narratives’.

The EPIC Map (Padlet Page)

This Padlet takes you to the open-access EPIC map. You will see that we have already added a number of books, and we will continue to do so. The books that we are adding are picture books and graphic novels, and sometimes they are a hybrid between both. Not all books are recent or can be found easily.

If you are not able to purchase a book (new or used), or borrow it from your local library, please check if a video read-aloud is available. We strongly advise teachers to check the book before presenting it to your class to ensure that it meets the needs of your class.

On the left of the map, you will see a white panel with a list of all the mapped books. We have added if it is a picture book or graphic novel, and we have also added the languages the book has been published in. For example, E = English, IT = Italian, D = German, CZ = Czech etc.

The Educator Guide

The Guide

This guide will offer some insights into the EPIC project and explain how the children in your class can participate and contribute.
You can access the full guide (Flipbook) here: https://heyzine.com/flip-book/  and we have also added some key information to this project page.

How can my class participate?

Here is how...

STEP 1: CHOOSE

  • Select one or more of our mapped picture books and graphic novels and read it.
  • Review the book(s) by reading the publisher’s information, book reviews and sample pages.
  • Make a book choice that is suitable for your class.

STEP 2: READ

  • Read the book with your class. Please check our lesson plans to see how you can structure a story-based lesson.

STEP 3: EXPLORE & RESPOND

  • Create tasks, activities and projects to help your class explore the lives and experiences of the people in the book.
  • Please check our lesson plans for teaching ideas which offer an opportunity for your class to reflect and respond.

STEP 4: REMEMBER & ENRICH

  • Add to the EPIC map by selecting the relevant book, clicking on ‘edit’ and then adding a link or an image to the work you and your class want to share.
EPIC Team
What can my class contribute?

Here are a few ideas which we hope will inspire teachers to create small (creative & cross-curricular) projects based on their selected book. Your contributions can be in any language.

PLACES: THEN & NOW

  • Focus on the places mentioned in your chosen book and compare information from ‘Then & Now’. Consider, for example, names of the countries & cities, their borders at the time, the ghettos & camps, the hiding places and the forests.

JOURNEYS

  • Map the journey(s) made in your chosen book.

TIMELINE

  • Make a timeline of the people in the book(s) including key information such as dates, places and events.
You can also connect this activity with ‘Then & Now’.

SURVIVAL

  • Research how the people in your chosen book survived.

GLOSSARY

  • Create a glossary with vocabulary & definitions for your chosen book.

BEFORE & AFTER-THE-WAR

  • Collect information to show the lives of the people in your chosen book before and after-the war.

NB:

  • Your words must align with the spirit and purpose of this project.
  • We will remove any content that is inaccurate, disrespectful,
unsuitable for younger readers, drama-based, or includes photos of children.
Teaching & Lesson Ideas

In the EPIC educators' guide, you will find numerous ready-made lesson plans written in different languages (English, German, French and Italian) of books linked to the EPIC Map. These lesson plans were developed for two projects:

  • Erasmus+ FAST Project
  • Drawn Together Picture Book Project

We would like to gently point out that the inclusion of pictorial children’s Holocaust literature, such as picture books and graphic novels, in the classroom with children aged 10+ must be prepared carefully. The following lesson plans are underpinned by a story-based teaching approach embedded in a children’s rights perspective called Safe In & Safe Out by Gruenbaum (2025), adapted from Ellis and Gruenbaum (2023). The following images offer an overview of the model and a sample teaching guide.
