The tiny particles dance

This children’s disco is all about the movement of quanta – the smallest particles studied to date. What are quanta? How do they move? And how do they make an LED light up?

Following a brief introduction by Dr Anne Geese from the Department of Physics Education at the Technical University of Braunschweig, choreographer and dance scholar Dr Dominika Cohn will lead a mini dance workshop.

Inspired by what we’ve learnt about quantum physics, we’ll be dancing to some cool tunes and lighting up the Science and Art Lab with our own homemade flashing lights.

Justus Schulze and Michèle Wessa

In a duet, an artist and a researcher will present the work they are currently engaged in. Even though some of the topics may seem worlds apart, we look forward to exploring the common ground and connections between them.

Justus Schulze is an artist and transformation designer. His work explores the relationship between people and places. In his Master’s thesis at the HBK Braunschweig, he developed an artistic research method that explores site-specific processes of identity. Through a multimedia and participatory approach, people were able to forge new connections with their living environment.

Prof. Dr Michèle Wessa is a psychologist who investigates what keeps us mentally healthy during difficult periods in our lives. She heads the Department of Cancer Survivorship and Psychological Resilience at the DKFZ Hector Cancer Institute, as well as the Department of Neuropsychology and Psychological Resilience Research at the Central Institute for Mental Health in Mannheim.

Michèle Wessa and Justus Schulze are jointly launching an artistic research project designed to explore the potential of art in the context of psychological resilience in cancer patients.

Louise Ward Morris: MIRAGE

Louise Ward Morris is exhibiting sculptural works created during her artist residency at the Institute of Semiconductor Technology.

Against this background Louise developed an artistic research project titled „Digital Mirage“, which converges energy, light and data in space using screen technology and sculpture. The project explores how visible transitions between light and energy manifest in the digital aesthetic on-screen and includes a unique process of handmaking liquid crystal pixels.

In collaboration with LENA, Louise investigated how light and air can function as media for the transmission of digital and image-based information - for example through the use of micro-LEDs in neuromorphic computing and translucent screens.
