MassIMO

Cell Free Massive MIMO Systems

About the project

The MassIMO project "Cell Free Massive MIMO Systems" creates the scientific and technical foundations for the mMIMO technology as a new architecture in dense 6G networks. The functional implementation is demonstrated in an industrial environment. The introduction of this technology represents a disruptive step with a high level of innovation in terms of 6G challenges. This new, cell-free multi-antenna technology for dense interference networks can be used, for example, in an industrial Internet of Things (IoT) or in hot-spot scenarios within a smart city environment.

The idea is based on distributed, highly networked massive MIMO access points connected through a high-rate fronthaul connection to a controller. The cell-free massive MIMO technology (mMIMO) provides high data rates, high reliability, low latencies and high energy efficiency with regard to the future requirements of 6G networks.

Project information

  • Funding: 07/2022-06/2025, Federal Ministry of Education and Research

Partner

  • Infineon Technologies AG

  • Ericsson Antenna Technology Germany GmbH

Project goal and approache

The project aims to achieve the following goals:

  1. A significant increase in energy efficiency (Mbit/J) by a factor of >2.
  2. A cost reduction of GaN components by >50%.
  3. Improvement of the failure probability by several orders of magnitude (>3) while reducing latency.
