GIGABAT project will bring together the existing suppliers in the battery value chain and will incorporate new companies to the battery market to complete it, based on a global strategy. GIGABAT will contribute to having integrated suppliers delivering cost competitive and optimized production machinery.
The main objective of GIGABAT is to strengthen the European battery manufacturing industry, by the engagement of its key players, for the development of a high-quality, cost-efficient battery value chain, focusing on GEN3b (lithium ion) technologies. This will require the development of new, energy-efficient, battery manufacturing machinery or its adaptation to new battery configurations and specifications, as well as functional tests in pilot plants in order to verify the correct functioning in representative environments. The integration and optimization of Gigafactories via sector coupling is also targeted, promoting sustainability, lower carbon footprint, more efficient energy management, digitalization and integration of made-in-Europe machinery.
Specific tasks of TU Braunschweig (IWF)
- Development of a framework to evaluate absolute sustainability of battery Gigafactories
- Determine quantitative targets for battery Gigafactories to reach absolute sustainability
- Support in development of battery passport and digitalization of the production plant
