ISBS Testing Laboratory

The Material Testing Lab affiliated to the ISBS is located on the ground floor of the institute building, spreading over an area of about 700 square meters. In the lab standard and latest test methods for road construction materials are applied. The main focus lies on testing asphalt materials, in particular the characteristics of its individual components aggregate and bitumen. In the field of experimental bitumen and asphalt mix research latest test methods are used and new performance-based testing methods are being developed. Thus, asphalt quality can be assured, new recipes can be tested and realistic simulations of materials behavior can be made. With help of the results from laboratory testing and computer simulations new building materials and new methods for roads and air traffic construction can be developed.

Our range of services includes:

  • Basic research in building material technology
    • material science-oriented development of (international) test standards for bitumen-bound building materials
  • Applied research for the construction industry and building materials industry at home and abroad; associations, EU, federal and state

    • Optimization and recycling of bitumen roofing membranes
    • new construction methods, building material technologies and maintenance strategies for road infrastructure

    • Recycling of road construction materials (asphalt recycling, slag recycling, fibres, binders)

    • Development of low-energy and low-emission concepts

  • Scientific support of innovative construction projects; damage analyses and restoration concepts; testing of building materials during development; consulting on testing and methodological issues

  • Quality assurance for the Nds. road construction administration as an independent test centre according to RAP-Stra (guideline for the recognition of test centres for building materials and building material mixtures in road construction; since 1972)

  • Training center for building material testers
