The ISBS is also a training center for building material testers with a focus on asphalt technology.
Building material inspector is a state-approved training occupation according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG). The standard training period in Germany is 3 years and is offered in the main subjects geotechnics, mortar and concrete technology and asphalt technology. The entry requirement is a successful secondary modern school leaving certificate. The training takes place four days a week in the ISBS laboratory and one day at the vocational school in Braunschweig. Theoretical block instruction with longer stays away from home is therefore not necessary for training in Braunschweig.

test and control the quality of building materials, their raw materials, building products, usage properties of soils and recycled materials,
carry out measurements and tests, prepare samples, produce samples and carry out sampling
carry out quality assurance measures, plan and document their work, record the quantities and time spent, calculate the services rendered and take measures for safety and health protection at work as well as for environmental protection at the workplace
control and evaluate work results,
explain the test services provided and test results in discussions with customers,
apply working materials, construction raw materials, binders, mixtures and recycled materials, apply regulations for construction products, construction raw materials, soils, contaminated sites and recycled materials
use laboratory technology,
process, evaluate, prepare and document data
set up, secure and vacate workplaces,
handle and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment,
carry out their work independently, customer- and business-oriented on the basis of work orders or plans, alone and in a team, and coordinate it with other trades.

Building material testers are employed in companies of the building industry, in quarry operations as well as in monitoring and research institutions, which e.g. carry out structural engineering investigations. Furthermore, there may also be suitable fields of activity in the mineral oil processing industry or in the recycling industry.
